Steel
or Graphite
Advantages Of Steel
- Steel
shafts are much stronger than graphite. This prevents the
shaft from bending a lot during the swing, which results in
more accuracy when compared with graphite.
- Steel
shafted clubs usually cost 20% less than graphite.
Advantages
Of Graphite
- Graphite
shafts are much lighter than steel, which means more distance.
- Graphite
shafts usually have better feel to them when the ball is hit.
Recommendations
For woods
we recommend graphite shafts to most players. Although some
accuracy will be lost, the added distance gained from graphite
will be worth it. If you have a considerable amount of distance
already, place a high premium on accuracy, or don't want to
shell out the money for graphite, than steel shafted woods may
be a better choice.
For irons,
the main thing to consider is your swing speed. Players with
below average swing speed will benefit from the lighter weight
and increased distance of graphite, while players with average
or above average swing speeds will benefit from the increased
accuracy of steel. We recommend most younger, older, and female
golfers go with graphite, while the typical male will probably
be better off with steel.
Shaft
Flex
Flex simply
means how flexible the shaft is. The more club head speed you
have, the less flex your shaft should have, and vice versa.
The charts below are helpful in determining what flex is best
for you.
